The training period combines theoretical orthoptics and clinical exposure. Trainees work

under the direct supervision of a certified orthoptist and an ophthalmologist. The student

is provided with a basic foundation upon which he or she may fully build his or her

capability and willingness. The goal of this training program is to provide

ophthalmologists and orthoptists with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in

orthoptic assessments and management. The program focuses on the diagnosis and

treatment of strabismus, amblyopia, and other binocular vision disorders, combining

theoretical learning with hands-on clinical experience to ensure comprehensive

competency in orthoptic care.

• Participants gain familiarity with the principles of orthoptic assessments, including cover testing, prism usage, and measurement of eye movements.

• Training includes understanding the anatomy and physiology of the visual system, particularly regarding strabismus and amblyopia.

• Theoretical sessions cover topics such as binocular vision, alignment disorders, and the role of orthoptics in pre- and post-operative strabismus management.

• Trainees practice performing eye movement assessments, measuring ocular deviations, and using prisms for diagnostic purposes.

• Hands-on exercises focus on training in vision therapy techniques, amblyopia management (e.g., patching, atropine therapy), and strabismus treatment methods.

• Participants learn to utilize various tools and techniques to assess and treat common conditions like esotropia, exotropia, and amblyopia in both children and adults.

• The wet lab also covers the use of advanced diagnostic equipment such as synoptophore and video-oculography to evaluate eye alignment and motility.

• Under expert supervision, trainees apply their orthoptic skills in clinical settings, performing assessments and developing treatment plans for patients with binocular vision disorders.

• Trainees learn to manage both pre-and post-operative cases of strabismus, monitoring surgical outcomes and adjusting treatment protocols.

• Special attention is given to managing amblyopia, with a focus on early diagnosis and individualized treatment plans.

• Real-life case discussions and direct patient interactions enable trainees to refine their diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making skills.
